The Ultimate Guide to Practicums: Hands-On Learning at Herzing University

Have you ever tried to learn another language overnight? It’s not easy and, when you are beginning a new degree program, that’s exactly what it can feel like. Brand new terms and things you are expected to just “know” can cause even the most well-prepared student to stumble. One word you’ll be hearing during any healthcare or nursing degree program is practicum. It’s not a word out of a Harry Potter spell, it’s an essential stage of getting you from the classroom to your career. What exactly is a practicum, and why is it such an essential part of learning?

Let's explore the fundamentals of practicums, how they can shape your academic and professional future, and how Herzing University supports students through every step of the experience.

What is a Practicum?

In the simplest terms, a practicum is a supervised, practical application of your field of study. Often a mandatory component of professional degree programs, the purpose of a practicum is for students to gain hands-on, real-world experience in classroom theory and skills training.

Unlike traditional internships, practicums are specifically designed to connect academic learning with professional practice. Practicums also are typically more structured and closely monitored by the academic institution and the host organization, ensuring that participation is both meaningful and educational.

Practicum 101

Participating in a practicum is an exciting blend of coursework and real-world learning. You’ll dive into a curriculum that covers key competencies in your field while gaining hands-on opportunities to put that knowledge to work. Your assignments, discussions and field work are all designed to create a seamless, integrative experience.

When you’re in the field, your main job will be shadowing. But don’t worry–you won’t be doing it alone! You’ll have a mentor or supervisor who is an experienced professional, guiding you every step of the way. They’ll help you apply your coursework and skills training correctly and ensure you stay on track with your course goals and objectives.

For example, if you’re in a nursing clinical practicum, you’ll work in an acute care setting, such as a clinic or hospital, under the supervision of a qualified instructor who works at the organization. If you’re doing a social work practicum—often called field education—you might find yourself in a school, mental health clinic, senior center or other community and government agencies, supervised by a social work professional.

At Herzing University, most practicum students will meet with their field instructor weekly and submit weekly communication forms to support successful learning. Plus, the Director of Field Education is available for one-on-one support throughout your journey.

The Many Benefits of a Practicum

A practicum is more than just a chance to apply what you’ve learned in class–it’s packed with benefits that can shape your future career.

  • Professional Development: A practicum helps students gain essential professional skills, such as time management, teamwork and collaboration, problem-solving and effective communication.
  • Build Networks: Practicums are fantastic for networking. Students can build strong connections with their mentors and the staff at their agency or organization, which can be incredibly helpful in their future job search.
  • Realistic Understanding: Students will get a firsthand look at the day-to-day realities of their chosen careers, enabling them to prepare for and smoothly transition into post-graduation life.

How to Find Your Perfect Practicum

All students must complete an 8-week practicum readiness training. During this time, you’ll meet with the Director of Field Education to discuss your career goals and interests. Then, you’ll identify three local agencies or organizations that could be a great fit for your field practicum placement. Whether you attend class on campus or are fully online, finding a nearby placement is essential for building a network where you plan to start your career

Once you’ve identified potential agencies and organizations for placement, the Director will provide hands-on support throughout the application and interview process, making sure everything is set for the following semester.

Four Ways to Make the Most of Your Practicum

A practicum can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of it:

  • Stay Engaged: Take an active role in your practicum. Ask questions, seek out learning opportunities, and keep an open mind when trying new things.
  • Make Connections: Use this opportunity to build professional relationships. Networking can provide valuable connections and open doors for future employment.
  • Reflect Regularly: Reflection and feedback are key to deepening your understanding. Keep a journal, engage in discussions, and get feedback from your supervisor.
  • Show Initiative: Don’t be afraid to take on additional responsibilities or volunteer for projects. Showing initiative can make a lasting impression, enhance your learning experience, and build a good reputation.

Starting your practicum is a significant step in getting you the support and guidance needed to thrive now and as you advance into your post-graduate career.

Whether you’re a nursing student with a clinical practicum in acute care or a social work student developing essential client skills, remember to make the most of this opportunity. Engage actively, build connections, and embrace every learning moment. Your practicum is more than a required part of your learning experience—it's a unique period where you can test your knowledge, grow your skills and prepare for a successful future.
